Floyd Robert “Butch” Chatham, 69, died Friday, July 26, 2013 in Biloxi, MS. He was a free spirited, outgoing and loving guy. Floyd was a lifelong Catholic attending Sacred Heart, Nativity B.V.M. Cathedral and Our Lady of Fatima. He was employed with Howard Memorial as a grounds keeper.
Though afflicted with cerebral palsy, his greatest success story was his graduation from D’Iberville High School, being assisted by many classmates and friends who helped him with his homework. Floyd was very involved with Cursillo Movement and spent many weekends on retreats on kitchen duty in Dedeaux. He made several mission trips to Mexico as well as several trips to the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, Georgia and Thomas Merton’s Monastery in Kentucky with his cousin, Fred Weems.
The family wishes to extend gratitude to Father “Paddy” Mockler, all priests, nuns, and Eucharistic ministers at Our Lady of Fatima, Nativity B.V.M. Cathedral and his caregivers at Biloxi Community Living Center. They would especially like to thank his nurses Brenda Reese, May Baylis, Gentiva Hospice, Leah, his hospice nurse and Fran Weems for giving her devoted time, prayers and love for comforting him through his end of life trials.
Floyd is preceded in death by his parents, John and Rita Chatham; aunts, Bessie Weems, Thelma Gartman and Mary Ellen Rossetti; and uncle, Freddie Weems.
He is survived by his sisters, Karen Sims and Gwen Varney; brothers, John C. Chatham, Sr. and Scott Chatham; cousins and caregivers, Phyllis and Ronald Bourgeois and Helen and Sonny Ross; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church on Monday, July 29, 2013 where friends may visit two hours prior to service time. Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe is in charge of arrangements. Interment will follow in Biloxi City Cemetery.
