Allison Powell Shoemaker, III. With adoration and in remembrance, we announce the passing of Mister Allison Powell Shoemaker, III, of Gautier, Mississippi. Born in Biloxi on the 9th of May, 1945, to Frances Marion Ramsay Shoemaker and A.P. Shoemaker, Jr., Powell left this earth Friday the 17th of June surrounded by his loving family.
Powell, who was an incredibly loving and generous soul, spent most of his days on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. As a youth, he attended the Gulf Coast Military Academy and continued his education at Biloxi High School. Upon high school graduation, Powell became an Ole Miss Rebel. It was at the University of Mississippi that Powell met his devoted wife of the last 44 years, Mrs. Elaine Elizabeth Wootten Shoemaker, originally of Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Powell earned his BA in Business Administration from the University of Mississippi in 1967.
Powell proudly served our country in the U. S. Army as a 1st lieutenant in the Vietnam War; upon return home from service, he and Elaine ultimately settled in Gautier, where they raised their girls and he began a long career in management at Ingalls Shipbuilding. He was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and devoted much of his time to St. Pierre’s Episcopal Church of Gautier.
Powell is survived by his wife, Elaine, as well as his four daughters and two sons-in-law, Elizabeth Michelle Shoemaker, Carolyn Ramsay Shoemaker Sadkowski and Bartlomiej Krzysztof Sadkowski, Melissa Wootten Shoemaker, and Allison Joy Shoemaker Kinney and William Kim Kinney. Powell also leaves behind two wonderful sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn “Lyn” Shoemaker Brown and Raymond L. Brown, and Ramsay Shoemaker Marcy and Robert “Bob” Marcy; his Aunt Teeny Ramsay Appleton; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and one precious granddaughter, Hilah Elaine Sadkowski.
We will gather to remember and honor this exemplary man at St. Pierre’s Episcopal Church of Gautier this Tuesday the 21st with visitation at 2pm in the Parish Hall and services at 3pm. Interment will follow at the Ramsay Family Cemetery in North Jackson County shortly thereafter.
From the days of his youth spent on Biloxi Beach to his adulthood spent boating to the barrier islands, Powell Shoemaker remained a true champion of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It is with his love of our waters in mind that his family asks, in lieu of flowers, donations please be made to the Mississippi Maritime Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the maritime heritage of the Gulf Coast and providing maritime-based educational programs and opportunities for the Coastal community. Please send donations to The Mississippi Maritime Heritage Foundation, 4357 Twisted Run Lane, Vancleave, MS 39565. For further information, visit their website at www.mississippimaritimeheritage.com.
