Andrew George Jackson, 86, passed away peacefully at his home in Vancleave, Mississippi on Friday, August 23, 2024. He was surrounded by family and his wife of 62 years, Zelma Faye.
After graduation from Brandon High School in 1957, Andrew worked for a few years before joining the US Army for two years; while enlisted he received awards including Sharpshooter, Expert in Carbine, and the First Award Good Conduct Medal.
Andrew had several jobs over his career, but it began and ended at Ingalls Shipbuilding upon his retirement in 2001. While there, Andrew made many friends; some of whom either phoned or visited him in his last weeks of life.
Andrew enjoyed fishing in his pond with his grandchildren and letting friends and neighbors fish as well. He loved deer hunting with his hunting camp buddies early in life and with his son and grandson in his older years. He was the last surviving founding member of the Bluff Creek Hunting Club in Vancleave, Mississippi and enjoyed visiting old and new friends at the deer camp when possible.
He was an 18-year member of the American Legion Post 42 in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, where he served as a past Chaplain. He loved participating in the American Legion and Forty and Eight events like “Flags for First Graders” on behalf of all Veterans. Andrew loved the American flag fiercely. He kept several flags in his vehicle and would stop and give them to businesses whose flag needed to be replaced.
Andrew was a member of Lemoyne Boulevard Baptist Church for over 30 years. A loyal lifetime servant of God, Andrew was involved in many ways during his lifetime supporting fellow members and church projects wherever he lived. He was currently working with LBBC to finalize plans and build an exterior digital sign for the church and would have loved to see it completed.
He is preceded in death by his parents; James Houston Jackson and Annie Mae Jackson, and two sisters; Willie Lee Jackson and Henrietta Sistrunk.
He is survived by his loving wife; Zelma, children; Randy Jackson (Janine), Candy Palazzo (Ryan), Jeff Jackson (Kathryn), Grandchildren; Brittany, Jared and Lane Jackson (Ontonio), Lucas and Carly Palazzo, and great-grandchild; Nova Mae Fairley. He was also survived by his brothers; James Houston Jr, Max Jackson, Paul Jackson and Ronnie Jackson whom he loved dearly.
He will be remembered for all of the love he shared with family and friends. He truly loved each of them and if you knew him, you knew it. He loved his grand-dogs and they provided so much joy to him. There was so much to him besides husband and father, though these roles were his greatest. He will be dearly missed by all.
The family wishes to thank the many doctors, nurses and caregivers at Singing River Hospital System, Singing River Cancer Center and Hospice of Light.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, September 6, 2024 at Lemoyne Boulevard Baptist Church. Friends may visit one hour prior. Burial will follow at the Biloxi National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests for donations to be sent in his memory to the Lemoyne Boulevard Baptist Church for assistance with completion of the digital sign. Please write ‘In Memoriam- A. Jackson’ on the memo line. LBBC is located at 1505 Lemoyne Blvd, Biloxi, MS 39532.
