Ann Carol Day Fortenberry died on Saturday, December 30, 2006 in Gulfport, MS, at the age of 66. She was born August 16, 1940, the only child of Tom and Mildred Trigg Day of Waynesboro, MS, where she lived until moving to Long Beach in 1956. Carol graduated from Long Beach High School in 1957 and from University of Southern Mississippi in 1961. She taught English at Orange Grove Junior High; Long Beach Junior High; Brandon, MS, High School; and D’Iberville High School for a total of 37 years, retiring in 2001. She treasured friendships made among co-workers and students throughout the years. She worked part-time after retirement at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center as a receptionist. She was preceded in death by parents Tom and Mildred Day of Long Beach, grandparents Carlos and Pearl Hathorn Trigg of Clara, MS, and Gordon and Ruth Bond Day of Gulfport, and her husband of 43 years, Edward Clinton Fortenberry. She is survived by sons Anthony Edward Fortenberry, his wife Claire, and their two sons, Gavin and Dylan, who live in California and by Thomas Clinton Fortenberry, his wife Celine, and their three children, Christopher, Alex, and Jana Marie, who live in North Carolina. She is also survived by one aunt, Wanda Day Newman of Gulfport and by cousins Susan Rouse of Long Beach and Joe Newman of DeLisle. Carol will be remembered fondly by the many teachers with whom she server through the years and by neighbors and close friends who lent invaluable support in her final years on Briarwood West in Gulfport. She leaves this world in anticipation of joyful reunions with family and an assurance of life everlasting. She was a member of Lyman First Baptist Church. Funeral service will be Thursday, January 4, 2007 at 11AM at Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home on O’Neal Road in Gulfport. Visitation will be from 10AM to 11AM. Interment will be in Southern Memorial Park in Biloxi. The family request memorials to the charity of one’s choice in lieu of flowers.
