Antonia Skrmetta Werthner, 89, a resident of D'Iberville passed away on Thursday, September 1, 2011. She was born in Biloxi at home on Oak Street on May 11, 1922. Her parents arrived in Biloxi from Yugoslavia in the early 1900's. Antonia was the youngest of three children (Margaret and Nick) born to Anica Marinovich and John Skrmetta. As most people living on Point Cadet in Biloxi, she began working in the seafood industry at an early age. Then she worked at the main PX at Keesler Field. Later in life she lived in Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and Oklahoma returning to the coast for the last forty years of her life. Antonia loved to cook, taking great pride in her creations, gardening of flowers and vegetables, and exploring by traveling.
She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Margaret Greenwood.
She is survived by her two sons, Bill Caldwell (Mary) of Latimer and Ray Werthner of Larue; three brothers, Nick Skrmetta, Sam Djumov, and Steve Dujmov all of Biloxi, along with grandchildren, great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, Biloxi. Friends may visit from 12:00 p.m. until service time. Interment will follow in Crestlawn Memorial Park.
