Astrid Linnea Johnson

Astrid Linnea Peterson “Momo” Johnson was called home to heaven on February 19th, 2006. In the 98 years that she spent here on earth she touched the lives and hearts of countless people. A selfless, loving, caring woman; Mrs. Johnson was known for her acts of unbelievable kindness and generosity by all of those who were lucky enough to have met her. Born on May 12th, 1907 in New Windsor, Illinois; she moved to Harrison County, MS in 1946. Mrs. Johnson was a home maker, a musician, an avid gardener with a notorious green thumb, and a supervisor at the Markham Hotel until she retired and became the manager of the We Washee Laundromat for over twenty years. She played piano and organ for a number of different churches in Gulfport and the surrounding area for over sixty years, as well as playing for the Salvation Army for quite some time. Mrs. Johnson survived long enough to enjoy seeing five generations of her family alive at one time, not just through one branch of her family tree, but through twenty-seven. Awaiting her in heaven were her loving parents (Carl Peterson and Ida Anderson Peterson), her beloved husband (Ernest Johnson), two dearly loved sisters (Anna Johnson and Elma Bodine), two much adored sons (Leland Johnson and Lyle Johnson Sr.), and three fondly remembered granddaughters (Judy Holland Cuevas, Dana King and Denise Holland). Mrs. Johnson is survived and deeply missed by her only daughter (Ina Johnson Ladner; Gulfport, MS), her son and his wife (Dwight and Carlene Johnson; Houma, LA), and her only brother and his wife (Chester and Marjorie Peterson; Central Point, Oregon). Also surviving Mrs. Johnson, and deeply hurting from the loss of her in their lives, are her twenty-two grandchildren: Linda Miller (and husband Phil) of Bainbridge, GA; Donna Dykes (and husband Bobby) of Gulfport, MS; Sharon Hopkins (and husband Robert) of Saucier, MS; Karen Shocker (and husband Mark) of Wiggins, MS; Carla Jones (and husband Gary) of Saucier, MS; Keith Holland (and wife Pat) of Long Beach, MS; Jeanie McClendon (and husband Phil) of Ocean Springs, MS; Linnea Sweatt (and husband Kevin) of Roy, WA; Paula Crosby of Lizana, MS; Laurie Brown (and husband George) of the Washington, D.C. area of VA; Lyle Johnson Jr. of Gulfport, MS; Eddie Johnson (and wife Edith) of Houma, LA; Billy Johnson of Houma, LA; Dwayne Johnson (and wife Kelly) of Houma, LA; Jaime Johnson (and wife Sheila) of Houma, LA; Tracy Johnson (and wife Holly) of Rock Hill, SC; Sandra Bailey of Gulfport, MS; Vickey Mauffray (and husband Steve) of Pass Christian, MS; and Debbie Gables (and husband Don) of Lorraine, Ohio. Finally, there are also fifty-three great grandchildren and forty-three great great- grandchildren who will all miss Mrs. Johnson more than words can say. The viewing will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 23, 2006 at Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home, O’Neal Road, Gulfport. Funeral services will begin at noon in the funeral home chapel for all those wishing to attend. Mrs. Johnson will be interred for her final rest at the Saucier Cemetery in Saucier, MS.
