Augustus Albert "Bert" Simpson, Jr.

Augustus Albert (Bert) Simpson Jr., age 69, passed away Saturday, June 3, 2006, at Slidell Memorial Hospital after a courageous struggle with brain cancer. He was a long time resident of Slidell, Louisiana. He was born July 21, 1936 in Gulfport, Mississippi and graduated from St. Stanislaus, Bay St. Louis, Miss. He received a bachelor of business administration degree (magna cum laude) from Loyola University in New Orleans and his law degree from Catholic University in Washington D.C. Mr. Simpson served as a trial attorney, U.S. Department of Justice, and as a senior trial attorney for the Internal Revenue Service, before becoming an Administrative Law Judge. He served as an Administrative Law Judge and District Chief Judge with the Department of Labor (Metairie, Louisiana) for over 15 years. He then served as Associate Chief Judge with the Department of Labor, Washington D.C. until March 2005. He was a member of St. Margaret Mary Parish (Slidell) for 37 years. Mr. Simpson served as president of the St. Margaret Mary School Board and served as a member of the St. Margaret Mary Parish Council. He served on active duty with the United States Navy and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve JAG Corps. Mr. Simpson is survived by his wife of 44 years, Agnes Simpson, his six children, Michael Simpson of Slidell, La., Lisa D'Aunoy of Las Vegas, NV; Anne Gunter of Phoenix, Arizona; Theresa Stanley of Slidell, La.; Stephen Simpson of Gulfport, Miss. and Kathryn Wilson of Bristow, Va.; and 13 grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, Francis Schmitt Simpson and Augustus Albert Simpson Sr. of Gulfport Miss. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at 11:30AM at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Robert Blvd., Slidell, where friends may visit beginning at 10:00AM. A graveside service, with full military honors, will be on Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at 10:00AM at the Biloxi National Cemetery. Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home on O'Neal Road in Gulfport is in charge of arrangements.
