Betty Ann Hasbrouck
October 11, 1937 - October 7, 2024
Gulfport, Mississippi, - Betty Ann Hasbrouck, age 86, of Gulfport, Mississippi, previously Lubbock Texas, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 7, 2024 after a short illness. She was surrounded by her loving sons and daughter, grandchildren, and great grandchildren in the days before her passing, which was a few days before her 87th birthday.
Betty was born on October 11, 1937 in Greenville, Mississippi to parents Earl Rene and Minnie Jewel Crowson. Betty was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, Col. Larry Hasbrouck, United States Air Force (retired). Betty was also preceded in death by her older sister Jane Reeves, of St. Peters, Missouri and younger brother Ronnie Crowson, of Tupelo, Mississippi.
Betty was a devoted wife and mother and married into the “military life” traveling the United States accompanying her husband Larry with his military assignments in Missouri and Pennsylvania and then finally settling in Ocean Springs, Mississippi upon Larry’s retirement in 1983.
Betty Hasbrouck helped her husband Larry in his business and served as Registrar at the Real Estate Training Institute in Biloxi, Mississippi. Betty also was a member of the Treasure Oaks Country Club in Ocean Springs and participated in the Mississippi USTA matches playing women’s 3.0 singles/doubles at the state team Championship in Jackson, Mississippi.
Betty had a knack for interior design, and she could always work her magic with bright colors to energize you or warm earth tones to make you calm. Betty was a home styler, well ahead of the times we know today as HGTV and Extreme Makeover.
Betty was simply a whiz in the kitchen and culinary legends like Martha Stewart and Julia Child could never match her cornbread dressing, divinity candy, chocolate pie, and coconut cake recipes.
Many of us are dabblers at gardening—not Betty, she has always been a chock full of tips, like you wouldn't mix Iris and Chrysanthemums. Her yard beds and lawn scapes always looked like they could earn badges of honor like those awarded to the French Garden of Rundāle Palace and the Britain in Bloom Finals Tour.
Betty was the sole owner of a gift basket business called the “The Fruit Sellar Company” in Ocean Springs for many years. The children can attest to Betty’s “she got game” entrepreneurial skills and the dazzling arrangements she whipped up with fruit, cheezers, crackers, some film shrink wrap and an affordable no frizz hair dryer.
Betty was a self-taught artist. She learned to use oils as her favorite medium. She created beautiful cityscapes, landscapes, and still life pictures. Later in her life she just loved to sketch, and it did not matter what the topic was so long as she was sketching away.
Betty is survived by her children, her son Joseph (Dana) Hasbrouck of Wimberley Texas; daughter Leslie (Keith) Carraghan of Gulfport Mississippi; her son David Manzer (formerly married to Christine Manzer of Bastrop Texas) of Austin Texas and son Lawrence (Amy) Hasbrouck IV of Lubbock Texas.
She also leaves behind her beautiful and loving grandchildren Tess Hasbrouck, Matthew Manzer, Emma Manzer, Lawson Hasbrouck, Mollie (Trevor) Rockstad, and Evan Carraghan, and great grandchildren Ren and Rory Rockstad. The family wishes to thank the many nurses and resident and hospitalist professional staffs at Memorial Hospital Gulfport and the caregivers of St. Joseph Hospice of Gulfport for their care of “Ms. Betty” during her illness.
In lieu of flowers, the Family requests donations be made in her remembrance to Samaritan’s Purse at https://www.samaritanspurse.org/.
