Brooks B. Legate

Brooks B. Legate, 86, of Ocean Springs died of complications from Alzheimer’s disease, on June 19, 2007 in Alexandria, Louisiana. Brooks was born October 26, 1920 in Indian Mound, Tennessee. He graduated from Livingston State Teacher’s College in Livingston, Alabama. Brooks served honorably and faithfully in the U.S. Naval Service from February 2, 1939 and retired on August 29, 1962. During his service he earned the following medals and awards: Good Conduct Medal (7th Award), National Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. After his naval retirement he served 16 years as a civil service employee as an instructor at Keesler Air Force Base. His hobbies, which he dearly loved, included fishing, gardening and woodworking. He was preceded in death by his loving-wife, Hazel Legate, of 59 years; his parents Morris and Ella Mae Legate; his sisters, Doxie Ramsey and Minerva Johnson; his brothers, Dalton D. Legate and Oscar O. Legate. His sister, Wava Clark of Morgan, Tennessee and his only son, Bruce W. Legate of Ocean Springs, MS, survives him. Brooks, an active long time citizen, who greatly loved his city of Ocean Springs, and a firm believer of the individual rights and freedom of the tax paying citizen, was an activist of the singular rights of the private property landowner. He deeply instilled these principles in his only son who honors and respects his fathers’ beliefs and is deeply committed “in his heart of hearts “ to the same cause regardless of any outside pressure or influences. Private memorial services were held. The Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Homes in Biloxi was in charge of arrangements.
