Carol Jones

Dr. Carol Ann Buchanan Jones, of Gulfport, MS passed away, Thursday, May 9, 2024. She was 73 years of age. Carol was born June 26, 1950, in Blytheville, Arkansas, to Toler and Martha Buchanan. 

Carol graduated from Blytheville High School and attended The University of Mississippi, where she received an Undergraduate degree, a M.Ed. in Counseling Psychology, and a PhD in Counseling Psychology. Following graduation, she worked at Blinn College, in Bryan, TX as a psychology professor. After returning to “The Coast” she started as a Counselor at Anniston Elementary in the Gulfport School District. After leaving Anniston, she went on to work at William Carey University Tradition Campus as a Director for the Psychology Department and as a Chairperson for Counselor Education. Carol had a very active professional career and participated on numerous boards such as, Chairperson for the MS Board of Examiners for Licensed Professional Counselors, President of the American Association of State Counseling Boards, Co-Principal Investigator, and Mental Health Integration into Primary Care. In her free time, she enjoyed cooking, reading, and was an active follower/sharer of anything Golden Retriever and Ole Miss related on social media. She loved being a member of St. Peter’s and always enjoyed Father Patrick’s humorous sermons.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Toler and Martha Buchanan, and nephew, Brian Buchanan.

Survivors include her daughter, Martha Ann Jones; brother, William “Bill” Buchanan (Noni); nephew, Christopher Buchanan (Amanda); great niece and nephew, Darby and Hayes Buchanan; her Goldendoodles, Magnolia "Maggie" & Marigold; and her grand-dogs, Beignet & Poppy.

A memorial service will be held Monday, May 27, 2024, at 11am at St. Peter's By-The-Sea Episcopal Church: 1909 15th St, Gulfport, MS 39501. A reception will follow from 12pm - 2pm at the Gulfport Yacht Club: 800 East Pier Road, Gulfport, MS 39501.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Peter's By-The-Sea Episcopal Church: 1909 15th St, Gulfport, MS 39501. The family would also like to thank The Collum Family, The Elias Family, Gulfport Police Department, David Stanley, Father Patrick Sanders, and all the kind friends and family that have reached out. There have so many people that have been amazing and shown so much love since Carol’s passing.
