Cary Starr, 55, of Gulfport died Friday, August 12, 2005 in Gulfport. He was a native and lifelong resident of Gulfport. He was a graduate of Gulfport High School, Class of 1968, where he played football and ran track. He attended Perkinston Junior College, and attended optician school in Mobile. One of his favorite times was playing rugby for the Gulf Coast Rugby Club in the early 1980's. He also coached girls basketball for St. John Elementary and the city league between 1995 and 2000. Since 1980 he was the owner operator for Starr Optical in downtown Gulfport which was established by his father, Dr. W. H. Starr in 1950. Mr. Starr was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lizana. He was a director of the MS Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo overseeing the entertainment. He was grandson of Robert L. Rice, a founder of the rodeo. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert L. Rice, Sr. and Rose Miller Rice and William Henry Starr, Sr. and Isabelle Peppard Starr; his father, Dr. William H. Starr, Jr; a sister, Sandra Lou Starr; and an uncle, John P. "Jack" Starr. He is survived by a daughter, Stephanie Starr of Gulfport; his mother, Bobette Rice Starr of Gulfport; a sister Sheree Starr and her husband, Stefan Massong of Ocean Springs; and two brothers, William H. Starr, III and his wife, Darlene of West Palm, FL and Pat Starr of Gulfport. Visitation will be Sunday evening from 6 until 9 p.m. at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, 15th Street, Gulfport. The funeral service will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Gulfport.
