Charles M. "Charlie" Johnson, Sr.

Charles M. "Charlie" Johnson, Sr., 89, of Long Beach died Saturday, February 25, 2006 in Gulfport. Mr. Johnson was born in Mosheim, Tennessee and had been a coast resident for 30 years. Mr. Johnson was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Long Beach and the Gulfport Elks Lodge #978. He attended East Tennessee State College and was the retired communication supervisor for Union Carbide in Oak Ridge, TN. Mr. Johnson moved from Tennessee to the Gulf Coast in 1978 to join his son in the construction business. Declining health forced his retirement eighteen months ago. Mr. Johnson was an avid fisherman, fishing in the TVA lakes until moving to the Coast. He loved all sports, especially University of Tennessee football. Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by two grandsons, Scott Knight and Danny Knight; four brothers, Luke Johnson, Gaines Johnson, Dwight Johnson, and Willis Johnson, Jr. and a sister, Jerry Pietrangelo. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Trixie Johnson of Long Beach, a daughter, Nancy Carson of Long Beach; a son, Morris Johnson and his wife, Gerry of Gulfport; a sister, Gladys Carder of Sulphur Springs, TN; a brother, Coolidge Johnson and his wife, Edna, of Johnson City, TN; four grandchildren, Donna Keating and her husband, Hugh, Terry D'Angelo and her husband, Joey, Karen Lanning and Cindy Johnson; and eight great-grandchildren, Erin, Dennis, and Daniel Keating, Micky, Robby and Anthony D'Angelo, and April and Raven Lanning. The funeral service will be Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at 12 noon at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, O'Neal Road, Gulfport, where friends may visit two hours before the service. Interment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. The family prefers memorials to the First United Methodist Church of Long Beach, 208 Pine Street, Long Beach, MS 39560 or Humane Society of South Mississippi, 13756 Washington Avenue, Gulfport, MS 39503.
