Charles Vaughan Payne, age 72, of Gulfport, MS went to join the Angels on Feb 6th, 2014. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father and most important Papaw.
He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd Vaughan Payne; step- father, Charles Robert Fields; brother- C.R. Fields; and best friends, Larry Dornon and Dale Houston.
He is survived by, mother, Jayne M. Fields; brother, Thom (Darlene) Payne; sisters, Sue Payne, Katie Scully, Maura Scully; devoted wife of 25 years Diana L. Payne; son, David Vaughan (Cheryl) Payne; granddaughters, Alexis M. and Bailey L. Payne; his always faithful companion, Chu-E; friend and music partner Johnny Koonse.
If you met him once you never forgot him. He was so easy to talk to, had a great sense of humor and was always a Southern Gentleman. He lived many lives in just a lifetime. He was born in Monroe, LA raised in Natchez, MS and Baton Rouge, LA “Geaux Tigers!!”
He was a Vietnam Vet. His true passion was music. He was a drummer with many bands including the 60’s duo “Dale and Grace”. He was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. His son now carries on the beat with his love of the drums.
Most people did not know he was also a cowboy at heart. He organized “The Payne Expedition” riding horseback from Boulder, CO to Washington, D.C. in honor of the Bicentennial in 1976. He worked in the Gaming industry before retiring.
His proudest accomplishment by far, was his son. He was also his son’s best friend and biggest hero. He loved spending time with his Family and Chu-E who all miss him every day and will cherish our fond memories of him always.
