Charles "Sonny" E. Weems, Jr.

December 8, 1934 — February 24, 2025

Ocean Springs

On Monday, February 24, 2025, Charles "Sonny" E. Weems, Jr., at the age of 90, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family.

Born in Biloxi to Charles "Charlie" and Glenna (Sherrell) Weems, Sonny inherited his love and appreciation of the gulf waters. Growing up on "the Point" he became a skilled craftsman boat builder and fisherman. Upon building numerous boats, he became the owner and captain of the Sonja Weems. After many years of shrimping and oystering, he began a new adventure as a seafood processor. Sonny, along with his brothers, Laddie and Ronnie, became co-owners of Weems Brothers Seafood Company. Sonny always enjoyed being on the water and has had several pleasure boats. He enjoyed hosting family and friends while participating in the Biloxi Annual Blessing of the Fleet and going to both Ship and Horn Island.

He met the love and joy of his life of 61 years, Joan Henderson Weems. The two settled in Biloxi until Hurricane Camile, which led them to move to Ocean Springs with their sons, Charles "Chuck" and Michael Dean. Family was very important to Sonny. He was a faithful man, a family man and a hardworking, humble and strong man. We will miss all the stories of the past which he told with amazing details followed with the sounds of his laughter.

He was preceded in death by parents, Charles "Charlie" and Glenna Weems; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Anita Weems; and brother-in-law, Matthew Hoffman.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joan (Henderson) Weems; sons: Charles "Chuck" (Darlene) and Michael Dean (Tracy); grandchildren, Caitlin (Kris) Arteche, Lindsey (Wesley) McCulloch, Laura (Kyle) Cooper, Samantha (Phillip) Resh, Jacob Weems, Ainsley Weems, and Sarah Weems; great-grandchildren, Waylin and Sunny Arteche and Rowan McCulloch; and siblings, Laddie (Barbara) Weems, Ronnie (Jeanell) Weems and Sonja Hoffman (Rodger Jay).

A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at First Baptist Church of Ocean Springs, at 10 am until time of service at 11 am. Entombment will follow at Southern Memorial Park in Biloxi.
