Delano Dawson

Delano Dawson, known as “Pete” to his friends or “Peter Rabbit” to his beloved wife of almost 67 years, passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023 at the age of 89 with his family by his side.

Delano was born on April 14, 1934 in Schoolfield, VA to Willian Hedley Dawson and Homie Talbert Dawson. He was raised in Schoolfield, VA and after the 8^th grade he began working in the cotton mills. He later joined the US Air Force, where he received his GED and took many college courses. After 20 years of service and several earned accolades, achievements, and awards, Delano retired from the US Air force. Following retirement, he made Florala, AL his home before moving to Mobile, AL. Dawson and his family lived in many places all over the world with their Air Force travels. He helped start many Baptist churches while overseas in the Air Force. He was a deacon for years at many churches including Orchard Baptist Church. He helped start and was president of Orchard Baptist Church Food Bank. He was also a member of Seamen’s Ministry in Mobile, AL. He loved to travel, spend time with his family, fish, and a good nap. He was an active father and was involved in anything his kids were a part of. He continued to do the same thing with his 9 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren by attending school functions, graduations, ballgames, recitals, pageants, and anything else they were a part of.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Homie Dawson; one great grandchild, Bryant Rhett Chapman; and all seven siblings.

The family requests that donations be made to local food banks or Gideon ministries.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 28, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Red Creek Union Baptist Church. Friends may visit one hour prior until service time. Interment will follow immediately after at Red Creek Union Cemetery. A reception will follow at Red Creek Union Baptist Church.
