Dona Joy Stephens, age 80, passed away on October 14, 2024, at her home in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Dona was born on January 7, 1944 in Jackson, Mississippi. Her family moved around quite a bit, but some of her fondest memories as a young person occurred in her hometown of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, where she met the love of her life, Barry Leroy Stephens. She served in the US Navy and later had a Hearth and Home store that sold fireplaces and home decor. She went back to school and attended the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College nursing program where she earned her registered nurse accreditation. Dona worked at caring for patients for over 35 years at Ocean Springs Hospital, Biloxi Regional, travel nursing, and later at Dr. Jim Martin’s medical office. She was known and respected throughout her career for her intelligence, hard work, dedication, and passion for helping others. Some of her most cherished trophies were the letters of recommendation that her colleagues wrote. Dona also possessed a wicked sense of humor.

Above all else, Dona was a devoted mother. She loved spending time with her children and was always there to offer guidance, support, and encouragement.

In her free time, Dona enjoyed rescuing and training dogs and was always eager to share her knowledge and enthusiasm with others. She was an active community member, volunteering for various causes and organizations.

Dona was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Barry Leroy Stephens; and her parents, Jane Lawrence and Roy Wiggins.

Dona is survived by her children, Robin Stephens Lund (Frank) and Bryan L. Stephens (Kimberly); her grandchildren, Chad Stephens (Jayme), Samantha Henderson (Zak), Breanne Brumfield (Bryce), and Kassidy Stephens; her great-grandchildren, Mila, Emmy, Vivienne, and Zephyr; and her dearest rescue dog, Callie Ann. Her memory will be cherished by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Dona’s favorite cause – our furry canine and feline friends. Donations in her name to Friends of Jackson County Animal Shelter or the Humane Society of South Mississippi are appreciated.

A private celebration of life will be held for family and close friends.

Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Homes is honored to serve the family of Dona Joy Stephens.
