Mrs. Dorothy W. Carter, age 85, died Tuesday, March 18, 2014 in Gulfport. Mrs. Carter was born in Andalusia, Alabama and she and her husband had been residents of Gulfport since 1960. She was a secretary at United Electric Company working with her husband, John R. Carter until 1985. In 1979 she and her son, Rick Carter owned and operated Carter’s Men’s Wear in Hardy Court Shopping Center, until she retired in 1989.
She was a member of the Gulf Coast Art Association, was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gulfport where she was also a member of the Scrap Iron Sunday School Class. She was an avid bridge player.
Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Carter; her parents, Barney Floyd Wiggins and Carmen Amos Wiggins; two sisters, Betty Pollock and Ocie W. Owens; two brothers, Lamar Wiggins and Buster Wiggins.
She is survived by her five sons, Jimmy L. Carter of Biloxi, Sammy Carter (Rose), Rick Carter (Stephanie), and Joey Carter, all of Gulfport and William Carter of Perkinston; a sister, Rosa Nell Walker; two brothers, Hinton Wiggins (Linda) and Barney Wiggins, all of Andalusia, AL; fourteen grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Gulfport, Highway 605, where friends may visit beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Gulfport.
