Dr. Joseph Burrill Bernheim

Dr. Joseph Burrill "Dick" Bernheim, passed away Thursday, November 6, 2008. Dr. Bernheim was born June 4, 1922 to Georgia Mae Shirley Bernheim and Paul Bernheim in Gulfport, MS. Dr. Bernheim was a retired dentist having practiced in Gulfport for many years. He graduated from Gulfport High School in 1940, attended Tulane University one year before transferring and graduating from The University of Mississippi. While at the University he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. After graduation he was commissioned into the Navy. He then attended dental school at Loyola University in New Orleans. Dr. Bernheim served during WWII and achieved the rank of Lieutenant. Dr. Bernheim was a second generation Gulfport native. Dr. Bernheim is survived by his sister, Eleanor Bernheim Bass of Laurel, MS, brother P. G. Bernheim and wife, Lyn of Gulfport, nieces and nephews as follows: Richard LeRoy Bass of Collins, MS, Stephanie Bernheim Hebert (Harry) of Lafayette, LA, Lynn Bernheim Irving (Bud) of Bedford, NH, Paulette Bernheim Garton (Jimmy) of Columbus, MS, P.G. Bernheim, Jr. (Machelle) of Madison, MS, Marsha Bernheim Brown (Mike) of Pass Christian, MS, Michelle Bernheim McMath (Ben) of Diamondhead, MS, Nancy Bernheim Reeves (Mike) of Columbus, MS, Amanda Bernheim Buckley (Kevin) of Richmond, VA, and Peter J. Bernheim (Kaye) of Gulfport, MS. He also leaves behind a host of great and great-great nieces and nephews and his very dear long-time friend, Elaine Martinolich. A visitation will be held Sunday, November 9, 2008 at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home on 15th Street in Gulfport from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. A private graveside interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be sent to The American Heart Association, 440 E. Pass Road, Gulfport, MS 39507 or to a local performing art association of your choice, as these institutions were dear to Dr. Bernheim.
