D’Wayne Wayde Swear died peacefully in his Gulfport, Mississippi home, surrounded by his beloved family, on March 5, 2018 at the age of sixty.
D’Wayne is preceded in death by his mother, Sadie Maye Hebert, and father, John Wilford Swear. He is survived by his wife, Susan Swear, son, Daniel Swear (Shelby Swear), daughters, Lindsey Garrett Gee (Jared Brennan) and Ashley Garrett Thomas (Jared Thomas), brothers George Swear (Georgetta Swear) and John Swear (Marilyn Swear), and grandchildren, Archer Henry Swear, Mason James Gee, and Cohen Jared Thomas.
D’Wayne was born on December 6, 1957 in New Orleans. He graduated from West Jefferson High School, Harvey, Louisiana in 1975 before obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Our Lady of Holy Cross College in 1984.
A Gretna native raised by his mother and grandmother, D’Wayne’s outstanding career in law enforcement began at the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office in 1977 where he was a Patrol Sergeant and a helicopter pilot. He signed on with the then-Naval Investigative Service (currently the Naval Criminal Investigative Service) in 1985, serving several stints in the New Orleans NCIS office separated by an NCIS post in the Philippines and jobs with two other federal agencies. One of the highlights of his illustrious career was “Operation Jambalaya,” a cold case homicide solved with the help of then New Orleans Police Lieutenant, Jeff Winn, who he always referred to as his “brother from another mother.”
After retiring from NCIS in 2010, he moved to Gulfport, Mississippi and married Susan Swear. Unable to separate himself from law enforcement, D’Wayne assisted the Gulfport Police Department and Hancock County Sheriff’s Office in his early stage of retirement. A few years later, D’Wayne received an unexpected phone call from CBS producer and showrunner, Gary Glasberg, leading to his appointment as the Technical Advisor to the television series NCIS New Orleans, an opportunity he referred to as “the best retirement job ever.” Glasberg was so appreciative of Swear’s input during the research phase of the new series, he gave actor Scott Bakula’s character Swear’s first name, minus the apostrophe.
