Eleanor Ruth Hamel Young

Mrs. Eleanor Hamel Young, age 83, of Ocean Springs, MS, passed away at her home on Friday, August 5, 2011. Mrs. Young was born in Yazoo City, on August 13, 1927. She and the late Glenn Young were married for 59 years. Mrs. Young was a lifetime member of the Ocean Springs Garden Club and served as its president in 1961. She was also very active in the Duchess Club. She faithfully managed the family’s multiple businesses. She was employed with Patterson’s Pharmacy in Ocean Springs as a bookkeeper for 29 years before retiring. She was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. In her later years, Mrs. Young enjoyed gardening and sitting on her sun porch where she could enjoy her flowers and all the birds that came to her feeders. Mrs. Young was preceded in death by her husband, son, George Anthony, and parents, Francis and Ellon Hamel. Survivors include four sons and a daughter; Glenn II and wife Terrilee of Ocean Springs; Gary and wife Pamela of Vancleave; Gayle Ann and husband, the late Carroll Gail Orfield of Vancleave; Gene and wife Modenna of Lexington, SC; and Gay Lorne and Valerie Wilson of Ocean Springs; eight grandchildren, Ginger Griffin, Brooke Eaton, Geoff Orfield, Aimee Young, Desiree Lennep, Jennifer Barrineau, Sarah Young and Christina Young; seven great-grandchildren, Renee Infante; Andrew, Matthew, Lillian and Issac Eaton; Cole Evans; and Henry Barrineau. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and by many dear friends, including Martha Champion of Jackson, and Jackie Prevost of Ocean Springs. On Tuesday, August 9, 2011, there will be a 2 PM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, where friends may visit from 1 PM until 2 PM. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Ocean Springs. The family would like to thank caregivers, Linda Gibbs and Ruby J. Johnson. The Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
