Emily Campbell Guthrie

Emily Campbell Guthrie, born in Inverness, Alabama March 15, 1917 to Fletcher and Estelle Campbell. She was married to George Guthrie, of Inverness Alabama, for forty years, taught school for twenty years and was a member of East Lake Methodist Church, in Birmingham, Alabama where she taught Sunday school for thirty years. She wrote and published a book on the history of East Lake Methodist Church. While still in Birmingham she served as Chaplin to the Salvation Army Auxiliary and was active in the Palladian Literary Club. George preceded her in death in 1988 and in 1989 she moved to Gulfport to be near her son George and her grandchildren. At her time of death she had two children, George and Nancy, two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. It was a gradual transition but everybody started calling her Miss Emily and Granny. As she got older her community and church activities did not reflect her age. She just kept going. Her Gulfport social activities include; past president of the New Comers Club, membership in the Magnolia Red Hat Club and a member of the D. A. R. Chapter of Gulfport. Miss Emily taught Sunday school at Trinity United Methodist Church and, at the time of her death, was a member of Ramsay Memorial Methodist Church where she was active in the United Methodist Women. Miss Emily opened the doors of her home to everyone as has been her gift of hospitality. A true Southern Lady, she loved everybody and is loved by everybody. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at 1:00pm at Ramsey Memorial United Methodist Church where friends may call one hour prior to service. BRADFORD-O'KEEFE FUNERAL HOME on O'Neal Road in Gulfport is in charge of arrangements. View and sign an online register at www.bradfordokeefe.com
