Evelyn Marie Smith Edwards, 97, of Ocean Springs, MS, died Friday, December 16, 2016 in Ocean Springs.
Mrs. Edwards was born on October 2, 1919 in New York City, New York. She was the daughter of the late Eva Marie Schmitt Smith and Joseph Smith.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, James W. Edwards and her daughter, Adrienne Lily Edwards Erwood.
She is survived by four children, Alison E. Grohman (Howard), Michelle Edwards, Patrick J. Edwards (Nancy), James V. Edwards (Virginia); four grandchildren, Eric J Grohman (Cynthia), Mark E. Grohman (Kristie), Chad A. Estro, and Alison E. Sinacore (Joseph), two step-grandchildren, Connie T. Williams and Ronnie A. Toncrey; and seven great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.
Evelyn was a long time member of Christus Victor Lutheran Church, Ocean Springs, past president and member of the Day Lily Garden Club, Ocean Springs and a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star in both New York and Mississippi.
She was a graduate of Jackson County Jr. College with a degree in Human Services and retired as an administrator in the mental health field from the Southeastern Regional Center, Long Beach and The Lord is My Help, Ocean Springs.
During WWII Evelyn worked for the war effort in New York and Los Angeles installing Sperry gun sights and P51 Mustang instrument panels.
She and her husband lived in California, Missouri, the Bronx, NY, and Long Island, NY before moving to Ocean Springs in 1970.
The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to her caregivers, Chad Estro, Jr., Charlotte Tanksley, the staff of Deaconess Home Care, Ocean Springs Hospital and Hospice of Light for their compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers friends may make a donation to Christus Victor Lutheran Church.
Visitation for friends will be on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM at Christus Victor Lutheran Church. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM. Luncheon in the Fellowship Hall at Noon. Interment at 1:30 PM at Biloxi National Cemetery.
