George Albert Brumfield, Sr.

George Albert Brumfield, Sr. age 87, of Ocean Springs, MS died on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, in Ocean Springs. Mr. Brumfield was born in Pike County, MS, on September 6, 1923, the fifth child of Albert O. and Ruby Simmons Brumfield. Following graduation from Magnolia, Mississippi High School, he went to work at Brumfield's department store from January, 1941, until he entered military service. He was sent to Europe on November 5, 1943 and participated in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns, serving in the anti aircraft artillery and transportation corp. After his military service, he attended Tulane University in New Orleans on the G.I. Bill, graduating with a degree in accounting in 1950. Over the next years he embarked on two different but equally interesting careers. The first was in the menhaden fishing industry where he began as a bookkeeper at the Moss Point, MS plant and retired in 1988 from the industry as senior vice president of operations for Zapata Haynie Corporation, a multistate fishing company. During this time he served on numerous industry and governmental trade organizations and groups, including serving as long-time Mississippi representative to the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council having been appointed by the Secretary of Commerce. In 1991, he began a second career along with his wife and sons starting a real estate investment company where he remained active until the time of illness. Mr. Brumfield was an active member of Crossroads Church of the Nazarene, enjoying Sunday School, worship services and especially fellowship with other Christians having become a follower of Christ later in life. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Katherine Mineo, Lucinda (Paul) Wynne, Dorothy (James) Woodward and Sarah Magee and brothers, Pat, Robert Lee (Shirley) and Mike. Survivors include two sisters, Pearl Brumfield and Ruby Brumfield, one brother, Albert (Marie) Brumfield; brothers-in-law, Sammy Mineo and James Magee, sisters-in-law, Anne and Jenny Brumfield, George's wife of 59 years, Bobbie Breland Brumfield, sons, George Albert (Sandra) Brumfield, Jr. and William Lee Brumfield, grandson, George Albert (Jessica) Brumfield, III and granddaughter, Laura Lynn Brumfield. Visitation will be on Friday, July 29, 2011, from 5 pm until 7 pm, at the Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home. On Saturday, July 30, 2011, there will be a 10 am church service at Crossroads Church of the Nazarene, 6150 Firestone Street, Ocean Springs, MS., where friends may visit from 9 am until 10 am. Burial will follow in Crestlawn Memorial Park.
