George "Flitter" Anthony Roberts

Mr. George "Flitter" Anthony Roberts, age 80, of Vancleave, MS passed away surrounded by his loved ones at Ocean Springs Hospital on Sunday, November 15, 2015. Flitter, as he was affectionately known, was born on May 20, 1935 in Biloxi, MS. He grew up on Back Bay, relocated to "the Point" on Pine Street and then settled in Vancleave where he lived the remainder of his life. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church. Flitter was a charter member of The Knights of Columbus council 10499, a past Grand Knight, State District Deputy and a member of The Fourth Degree. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Marie "Sweet" Roberts of Biloxi and his siblings, Ronnie Roberts, Buddy Roberts, James Roberts, Pat Roberts, Louise Roberts Irving and Helen Roberts Lang. Flitter grew up on Croesus Street, attended Notre Dame High School and married the daughter of a fisherman, Claudette Hebert. In his youth he worked on his father-in-law's boat, the "Whippoorwill." He briefly served in the Navy Reserves. Later he became a construction supervisor until retirement. Flitter built the family home on Highway 57 with the help of family & friends. It was there that he raised his five children: Rex, Gwen, Brenda, Andy and Rocky Roberts. The family made many memories aboard their boat, the "Silver Gold." Flitter continued to woodwork in his little shop out back oftentimes crafting gifts for his children and grandchildren. He could build almost anything. His attention to detail was passed down to each one of his children in their respective professions. Flitter was known for his sharp sense of humor, his smile, his wit, and deep loyalty to family and friends. Flitter and Claudette are also known for their annual Christmas Eve party open to all who knew them for nearly 50 years. Flitter was a fine singer and dancer and was known to cut a rug (especially the jitterbug) on any occasion. Flitter touched all who knew him. His legacy lives on in each of his children, grandchildren & great grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Claudette Hebert Roberts; children: Rex Roberts, Gwendolyn Roberts Flurry, Brenda Roberts Wade (Steven), Andrew Roberts (fiance Lisa Martin), Rock Roberts (fiance Cindy Sutera); Grandchildren: Clifton Cooper Flurry III (Mandy), Ladd Flurry, Chandra Flurry Nicholson (Casey), Luke Roberts (Amanda), Brooke Roberts Cruthirds, Logan Roberts, Marina Roberts, Savannah Roberts, Heather Wade Marquis (Joseph), Matthew Wade (Cherie), Tyler Roberts; Cain Martin, Ashton Hughes Hutchens and Brandon Hughes; Great Grandchildren: Grace, Addison & Cooper Flurry, Sadie, Emma, Klayton, Tucker & Jackson Roberts, Hannah, Frances & Ford Cruthirds, Alexandria Wade, Drayden Wade, Madelynn, Jude & Purslane Roberts, Saniyah Hughes, Madison Hutchens and Lanny Waltman; Surviving siblings: Hazel Roberts Aucoin (Noel), Roland Roberts (Sandra) & Beatrice Roberts Uher. Flitter will be loved and missed by dozens of cousins, nieces & nephews. Visitation will be on Thursday, November 19, from 12:30pm until 2:00pm, with a 2:00pm Mass of Christian Burial, all at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Crestlawn Memorial Park. The Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
