George Louis Simon, Sr., 89, of Biloxi, MS passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 15, 2010. He was a Master Petty Officer Gunner on the USS Battleship North Carolina, which he served on from 1938 until 1945. He was a retired WW II Veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Simon was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 1244, a member of the Elks 606, the VFW Post 2434. He was the owner/operator of Simon's Service Station for over 60 years. To this date Simon's is still in service after withstanding numerous hurricanes through the years and remains a historical landmark of Biloxi. Throughout the years the station was a place for friends to gather and seek advice and discuss past and current events over coffee, doughnuts and french bread.
Mr. Simon is preceded in death by his beloved son, George Louis Simon, Jr.; parents, Kathrine and Joe Simon; brothers, Sie and Joe Simon; sisters, Evelyn Plakey, Mary Rose Thomas, Adelle Todaro.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lurline Simon; sons, Joe, Mark, Wayne and Jeff Simon; daughter, Sally Simon; brother, Charlie Simon; sisters, Alice Neal and Betty Benton; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers donations to: Nativity BVM, c/o St. Vincent de Paul Society, 870 Howard Ave., Biloxi, MS 39530.
Visitation will be on Saturday, December 18, 2010 from 11:30 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. at the Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, Biloxi.
A procession will leave the funeral home at 12:45 p.m. for a Mass of Christian burial at Nativity BVM Cathedral for 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Biloxi City Cemetery.
