Gerald James Hopkins Sr.

Gerald James Hopkins, Sr., a beloved architect and founder of Hopkins Associates, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 8, 2024, at the age of 83. Born on August 19, 1941, Jerry's journey began in Biloxi where he was born on August 19, 1941, and lived his whole life. As a child he lived on Lameuse Street with his parents, Cyril and Dorothy Seymour Hopkins, and his brother Wayne. 

He graduated Biloxi High in 1959 and attended Perkinston Junior College and Louisiana State University Architectural School. Jerry became a member of the American Institute of Architects and honed his skills in architecture working for Buddy Fountain at Fountain Associates and after, founded his own Hopkins Associates firm in 1977 with offices on Beach Boulevard in front of the Everbreeze Trailer Court owned by his in-laws Capt. J.P. and Madeline Trochesset. There he designed too many projects to list here, including the Biloxi Natatorium, Biloxi Belle Casino, various hotels, condominiums and apartment complexes, Our Lady of Fatima Church and many other churches of many denominations. He was happy to serve God by designing places of worship for his many peoples. His wife, Gay Trochesset Hopkins, worked with him as the office controller. Jerry hired and mentored many young local aspiring architects from the Coast and New Orleans, who grew to have businesses of their own. Hopkins Associates thrived on the beach until 2005 when Katrina wiped it out. From that time until his passing, Jerry worked in his beautiful residence that he designed himself on Biloxi Bay. His Innovative designs and dedication to quality left a lasting impact on the community, earning him the respect and admiration of colleagues and clients alike. 

In his youth, Jerry was an athlete, excelling in varsity high school football and baseball, showcasing the same determination and teamwork that would later define his professional life. He also boxed in his father's boxing team. 

Jerry was very involved in his church, Our Lady of Fatima, and the Biloxi community his whole life. He as a member of the Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus, Parish Council, President of the Gulf Coast Swim Association, and President and Captain of Revelers. 

Jerry was a loving husband to Gay, his teenage sweetheart and loving wife of 62 years. He was a dedicated and loving father to their three sons, Gerald, Jr. (Debbie), Gary (Lillie), and Geremie (Shannon). He was a doting grandfather to his three grandsons, Jules Hopkins, Gerad Hopkins and Jacob Hopkins; and his two granddaughters, Liliana Hopkins and Madeline Aubrey Hopkins, who all brought immense joy to his life. Jerry is also survived by his younger brother, Wayne Hopkins. His family will remember him not only for his prolific professional and community achievements but also for his quick humor, devout faith, generosity, wisdom, unwavering love and support, and unquenchable zest for life! 

Jerry will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him. 

A celebration of Jerry's life will be held at 10 am on Monday, October 14th, 2024 at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Biloxi. Mass will begin at 11 am. Interment will follow at Southern Memorial Park Cemetery.
