Mr. Gerald Joseph Romero, 77, a native and lifelong resident of Biloxi, died August 17, 2007, at his home with his family after a four year battle with cancer.
Mr. Romero was preceded in death by his mother, Agnes Savoy Rushing, his father, Dorthy Romero, and his son, Russell Joseph Romero. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sally (Lee) Romero, of Biloxi; his daughter, Stacey Schultz, son-in-law, Gary Schultz; two sisters, Dorothy "Dot" Summerlin and Mary Rose Leahy, both of Biloxi; grandchildren, Joshua Adam Schultz and Haley Elizabeth Schultz of Gulfport, and Kathryn Ann Romero of Texas.
Mr. Romero was a graduate of Biloxi High School and served in the U. S. Navy for four years. He played baseball for the Navy and attended the University of Southern Mississippi where he played semi-pro football for the Gales. He retired after 36 years as an engineer with South Central Bell. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, a Pioneer, and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. When not working in his yard, he enjoyed critiquing the casino buffets, taking cruises and reminiscing with his life-long best friend, Raymond Skinner. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Visitation will be held Sunday, August 19, 2007, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Pass Road Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Homes in Biloxi. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church on Cowan-Lorraine Road where friends may visit one hour before service time. Interment will follow in Biloxi National Cemetery.
