Mrs. Pemberton was born on January 28, 1925 in Biloxi, MS. On June 18, 2012 she completed her journey on Earth and began her new journey with the angels. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima since the formation of the parish in 1953. She was the 1942 Freshman Maid in Mardi Gras and BHS Senior Maid Homecoming in 1941. She was a graduate of Biloxi High School and was the spearhead of all her class reunions with her faithful group. She was a member of the Sunshine Guild at Gulf Coast Community Hospital from 1984 to 1990.
Gloria and her late husband, Doug, played music as “Gloria and the Playmates” with the late Teddy Campbell, Carol Cunningham, Pat King and Marion Carpentar for 30 years at the Broadwater. They entertained for conventions for an additional ten years. She and Doug were inducted in the Gulf Coast Jazz Society in 1981. Gloria worked as a special events coordinator for Quality Home Health Care. She and Doug received a Papal Blessing from Pope Benedict XVI for their years of service to Our Lady of Fatima Church and School.
She is preceded in death by her parents Eddie and Estella Diaz Cannette; husband, Douglass Pemberton; five brothers, Eddie II, Eddie III, Eddie IV, Clyde and Gene Reid Cannette; four sisters, Theresa Cannette, Verna Mae Cannette Kuljis and Doris Cannette, her son Wayne Pemberton and daughter Belinda Pemberton Bogard and her husband Robert, and son-in-law, Malcolm Harmon.
Survivors include daughters, Penny Pemberton Spivey and husband Joel, Diedre Pemberton Harmon; six grandchildren, Kaylen Spivey Tapper (Tony), Jason Spivey (Carly), Belinda Hood, Wayne Pemberton, Douglass Hood, Lauren Pemberton Davis (AJ), and eight great grandchildren.
The family would like to express a very heartfelt “Thank You” to Brenda Gray, Penny’s angel on Earth and to Margie, Nancy, Nita and Kenny from Camelia Hospice, and to Dr. Y. Bethala and Diane, R.N.
Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. with a Mass of Christian Burail at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 22, 2012 at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. The Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements.
