Gordon L. Redd, Sr., age 87, of Gulfport and Mobile, died Sunday, January 23, 2011 in Mobile. Mr. Redd was born in Lincoln, Co., MS and attended high school at Johnston Station in Pike County, graduating in 1941. He was a member of Regency Church of Christ in Mobile.
Mr. Redd served in the Army Medical Corp from May, 1943 to June 1945. He was the NCO in charge of the Dental Laboratory at Fort Bliss, Texas and served as General X-Ray Technician while in China. He was discharged as a sergeant.
Mr. Redd attended Mississippi State University for two years. In 1947 he became associated with Redd Pest Control Company and in 1952 moved to Gulfport as a partner in the Redd Pest Control Company of Gulfport. He established offices in Pascagoula, Gulfport, and Mobile. In 1970 Mr. Redd purchased J. C.'s (his brother) interest in the coastal operation and began to establish a highly successful and respected pest control business in Gulfport and throughout the Coastal area as well as in South Alabama. On September 29, 1988 Mr. Redd sold the coastal operation to two of his sons, Gordon, Jr. and Kenny, who have been involved in the company for several years. Now the third generation of the Redd family is associated with Redd Pest Solutions. The youngest son, Eddy, after graduating from Mississippi State University, chose to go into sales with a medical equipment company in Louisiana.
Mr. Redd was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Gulfport for 45 years, serving as President and was presented the Kiwanis Tablet of Honor. He held offices in several trade associations and was co-founder and served as President of MS Gulf Coast Crime Commission. He received The Laurel Wreath Award in 1976 and served as Elder of the Gulfport Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mable Livingston Redd of Mobile; three sons, Gordon L. Redd, Jr. (Donna) of Gulfport; Kenny Redd (Lesa) of Mobile, Eddy Redd (Karen) of Madisonville, LA; seven grandchildren, Bevin Redd Brewer (Eddie), Trey Redd, Brandon Redd, Jonathon Redd, Julia Grace Redd, Annie Redd, and William Redd; and three great-grandchildren, Tripp and Isabella Brewer and Joseph Tyler "J.T." Cox.
The funeral service will be Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Orange Grove Church of Christ on O'Neal Road, Gulfport where friends may visit beginning at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
