Grorge Hiram Holladay, Jr.

George Hiram Holladay, Jr., 89, died December 14, 2005 in Johnson City, Tennessee. He was born on September 23, 1916, and was the son of the late George H. Holladay, Sr. and Clyde Herring Holladay of Laurel, Mississippi. Mr. Holladay graduated from Laurel, MS Public Schools. He attended Mississippi State, attended Georgia Tech, and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1940. At Georgia Tech he was a member of Phi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and served as President. He served in the Navy and was commissioned Ensign, USNR in 1941; on active duty from 1941 to 1946 during WWII and was discharged as Lt. Commander in 1946. He came to Gulfport, Mississippi in 1948, staying at the Great Southern Hotel. He was employed as Plant Manager and Chemical Engineer with Alpine Corporation. He was Business Manager at Gulf Park College in Long Beach, Mississippi and retired from self-employment in 1983. Among his civic and community activities, he served as President in Gulfport Jaycees, Gulfport Chamber of Commerce, and Gulfport Kiwanis Club, on the governing Board and Treasurer for the Gulfport Yacht Club. He was a member and Treasurer of St. Peters-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church and Gulfport Vestryman. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees at Christ Episcopal Day School, Bay St. Louis, Board of Directors United Fund and Advisory Board of the Salvation Army. Mr. Holladay is survived by one daughter, Leigh Ann Holladay Crawley and her husband, Marc Crawley, Sr. of Jonesborough, TN and two grandchildren, granddaughter, Katherine Crawley, of Jonesborough and a grandson, Marc Crawley, Jr. of Nashville, TN. Services for George Hiram Holladay, Jr. will be Monday, December 19, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, 15452 O'Neal Road, Gulfport, where friendsmay visit from 10:00 a.m. until the service. Interment will follow at Gulf Pines Memorial Gardens in Long Beach. The family prefers memorials to St. Peters-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, 1912 East Beach, Gulfport, MS 39501-2109.
