Guy "Binx" Walker

Our father, Guy Morrison "Binx" Walker, philosopher, historian, economist and inventor, died Friday night, March 28, 2008, in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. He was born July 8, 1923, the son of Merle Royse "Ole" Walker and Elinor Ritter Walker and the grandson of Guy Morrison Walker and Minnie Royse Walker and Halsted Ritter and Grace May Ritter. He was a DePauw University (Greencastle, Indiana) Phi Kappa Psi 'x44, graduate of the University of Texas, geologist, CPA, CLU and attorney. He graduated a year early from high school. At 6'4", he was a multi-sport star athlete in high school and college. Because of his poor vision, he had to make great efforts during WWII to reach the European Theater where he waded ashore at Normandy Beach, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of Paris. He carried a shrapnel wound after the war. He was a City Commissioner in Abilene, Texas. He practiced law and owned the notorious Jolly Roger Bar across the street from the state capitol building in Jackson, Mississippi. He conceived and developed the Ole Walker Baseball Field at DePauw University where he was the 6th generation to attend the University and the fourth generation in the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He lived in Ocean Springs, Mississippi at the time of his death. Our father's interests were varied and broad. He was deeply interested in world events, the philosophy and theory of economics and government, and national politics. He was a student of history, always questioning its effects on today's culture with strong but sound ideas about most things. He was a longtime member of the barbershop society S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A., and very loyal to his fraternity Phi Kappa Psi and DePauw University. He is survived by his children Stuart Walker of Cincinnati, Ohio, Douglas Walker and Alison Walker, both of Dallas, Texas, Cameron Walker, Guy Morrison Walker III, Bill Ballard and Paul Ballard of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and four grandchildren Kelsey, Alison, Christian and Elinor Walker. He is also survived by one brother Bruce Walker and his wife Mary Frances of San Francisco, California, his cousin, Guy Morrison Walker II and his wife Betty of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, a special friend Sue Leavell of Indianapolis, Indiana, his sister-in-law Jeannette Walker of Laurel, Mississippi, his former wife, Jan Walker of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, his brother Nibs' children Tom Walker, Jeanne Walker Bourland, Steve Barnett, George Barnett, Craig Horne, Stacia Horne Blau, and at least nine other nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, his brother F.H. "Nibs" Walker and former wife Carolyn Missman Walker. A Memorial Service for Mr. Walker will be held at a later date in June, 2008, in Greencastle, Indiana. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials be made to a fund that will be established for the benefit of Phi Kappa Psi at a later date. The Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
