Hal Alexander Charles died Sunday, March 6 at the age of 89 at Britthaven Nursing Facility in Chapel Hill, NC. Mr. Charles was born on August 7, 1921 in Hazelhurst, Mississippi to Ms. Mary O. and Mr. John A. Charles. He grew up in Jackson , MS and graduated from Central High School. He married Elizabeth Jane Foster and they lived in Jackson before moving to the Gulf Coast. Hal enlisted in the Army during WWII serving in Ordance and saw action in central Europe, Normandy, and Ardennes among others. He worked in the construction industry initially as a carpenter and later as a superintendent/supervisor. He attended the First Baptist Church in Long Beach where he served in a number of roles.
He is survived by his Son, Hal Cecil Charles, Ph.D. of Chapel Hill, NC where Dr. Charles lives with his wife Mary Wilroy Charles. They have two sons, Thomas Alexander Charles and Nathaniel Andrew Charles. He is also survided by his brother, Kenneth Charles who resides in Florida.
The service will be held at Bradford O’Keefe Funeral home on Saturday, March 12. Visitation will be at 10:00 with the service at 11:00 followed by burial in Long Beach, MS. Dr. LaRue Stephens of the First Baptist Church in Long Beach will deliver the service and the eulogy will be delivered by his son.
