Harry L. Davis, Jr., 76, of Gulfport, died Monday, February 06, 2006 in Biloxi. Mr. Davis was born in Gulfport and had been a resident of Gulfport most of his life. He was a graduate of Gulfport High School and Mississippi State University with a degree in forestry and horticulture. He was a charter member of Northwood Hills Presbyterian Church. Mr. Davis was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and a member of the Single Action Shooting Club. He was a former assistant scoutmaster and a camping and canoeing enthusiast. Mr. Davis was a supporter of the Gulfport Harbor Association and was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxillary, where he taught navigation courses. He manned the Boating Safety Booth at the Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo for several years and was a boating safety inspector at the Gulfport Harbor. He was also a member of the USS ATKA Reunion Association.
Mr. Davis was an eighth generation Mississippian and a descendent of Dr. William Lattimore, Mississippi's first congressman.
Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his parents, Col. Harry and Julia Davis.
Survivors include a sister, Patricia Davis Fulks and her husband, Tom of Gulfport; two nephews, Bill and Clay Fulks and several cousins including Dr. J.E. Davis and Don R. Davis.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at 1:00 P.M. in the Biloxi National Cemetery, with full military honors provided by the U.S. Navy. The family prefers memorials be made to St. Jude Childrens' Research Hospital, ATTN: Memorial/Honor Program FH, One St. Jude Place Building, Memphis, TN 38148-0552. Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, O'Neal Road, Gulfport, is in charge of arrangements.
