Helen Grey Newman Dauro, 82, of Long Beach, departed this life on Sunday, February 26, 2006 in Gulfport.
She was born October 24, 1923 in Gulfport and grew up in the Fernwood Community. She was fourth in a family of five, and was the surviving member of her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Edna Ladnier Newman; her brothers, Arthur, Jr. and James Newman; her sisters, Evelyn Newman Nelson, and Edna Bea Newman Wardlaw; and her dearly beloved husband, Vincent A. Dauro.
She is survived by her eleven children, Paulette Lovingood, Linda Bouleige, Sam A. Dauro, Gary V. Dauro and Judy, Helen Ann Dauro, Michael A. Dauro, Timothy Paul Dauro, Maria Davis, Colette Quigley and Mike, Vincent John Dauro, Frank Dauro and Denise; twenty grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The famiy moved to Long Beach in the mid-thirties, and she finished school at Long Beach High School in May 1942, a class of fourteen, as many of the students went to war. After finishing Spencer Business College in New Orleans, LA in 1943, Helen Grey and her sister, Evelyn joined the WAVES, USN-WR, and did their boot training at Hunter College, Bronx, Ny.
She later trained for Yeoman at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK for four months and finished at Norfolk, VA , Armed Guard School. She proudly served her country and was honorably discharged in March, 1946 as Yeoman First Class. Her parents proudly displayed a flag with four stars, as her two brothers were serving their country before Pearl Harbor.
Her favorite pastimes were gardening, knitting and writing.
