Mr. Howard C. "Van" Overstreet, age 43, of Vancleave, MS., passed away Saturday, January 15, in Gulfport, MS., following an eleven-year battle with cancer.
He was born July 8, 1961, in Hattiesburg, MS., and was a graduate of USM with a degree in Marine Biology. He developed a love for the sea while working aboard the USM-Gulf Coast Research Vessel Tommy Munro and obtained his Captains's license while surviving his initial fight with cancer. Van was an avid hunter and fisherman, whose exploits will remain legendary among his many friends from the Hattiesburg, Petal, and Gulf Coast areas.
Van was preceded in death by his father, Navy LCDR James H. Overstreet. He is survived by his mother, Ruth Overstreet, brothers, Ken, Keith, and Val, Uncle Don and Aunt Marilyn Logan, Uncle Tommy Overstreet, and a very special friend, Wendy Calogero.
Visitation will be on Thursday, January 20, 2005, from 9-10 AM with a 10 AM funeral service, all at Vancleave United Methodist Church in Vancleave, MS. A second service will be held at Parkway Heights United Methodist Church in Hattiesburg, with visitation from 2-3 PM, and a 3 PM funeral service. A graveside service will be held following at Roseland Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Paul Beaugez, Stan Williams, David Liverett, Greg Carpenter, David Mann, Micky Loewer, Harry Hunt, and Fred Curry. Pastor Larry Maugh of Vancleave United Methodist Church will officiate. The Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
