Irene Flavian, 94, of Ocean Springs, MS died on Tuesday, March 13, 2012. Mrs. Flavian was born in Biloxi, MS on December 7, 1917. She was an employee with the Telephone Co. and also the US Postal Service from 1956 until she retired from the Post Office in 1973. Mrs. Flavian’s passion was for golf that lasted for 64 years. She graduated from Biloxi High School in 1937 and was a Sunkist Ladies Medal Play Champion from 1958 thru 1967, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1983. She was also the Champion of the Gulf Coast Women’s Golf Assoc. for the years of 1965-1967, 1974, 1976-77 and 1982. Mrs. Flavian was the MS State Champion for Women from 1967 thru 1969. She was one out of only four women to have won the MS State Tournament for three straight years. She collected 7 holes in one at various courses, the last one at the age of 89 at Gulf Hills. Mrs. Flavian entered into Biloxi’s sports Hall of Fame on August 25, 1985. Her most treasured honor was from the MS Gulf Coast Women’s Golf Assoc. where they renamed a senior medalist trophy to the “Irene Flavian Award” on her 90th birthday.
Mrs. Flavian is preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Mena Darsse; husband, Edward J. Flavian; sisters, Madeline Blomberg and Louise Spencer.
She is survived by her daughter, Charlene (Ron) Simnicht; granddaughter, Richelle Neese; great-granddaughter, Gemma Neese and two step-grandchildren, Stephanie and Stephen Simnicht; nephews, Jim Spencer and Eddie Flavian.
The family wishes to thank all of her many friends with special thanks to Larue Lott, Betty Magealson and Julie Landry. Also to, Dr. and Mrs. James Martin, owner of Kare-Med, where Mrs. Flavian was lovingly cared for by Bea Richmond. The family also wishes to thank Jenny, Alicia and Caroline. Also to SAAD Hospice Care and especially Gloria Kostmeyer. Without Gloria, Bea and Kare-Med our family would never have had peace of mind.
Visitation will be on Friday, March 16, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. where friends may visit from 11:00 a.m. until service time. All will be held at the Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home.
Interment will be in Biloxi City Cemetery.
