Joel Alvin "Joe" Cottrell, 83, of Ocean Springs, passed into the arms of God on Sunday, May 29, 2011.
Mr. Cottrell was born in Ashton, RI to the late Joel and Agnes Cottrell of Winthrop, ME on June 14, 1927. He was a Navy veteran from WWII serving aboard the U.S.S. Casco APV-12. He settled in Ocean Springs in 1959 where he began working at Ingall's Shipbuilding as an electrician. He eventually started working for the Civil Service as a Navy Quality Inspector and he retired from that position after 26 years of service in 1989. Mr. Cottrell was a member of V.F.W. Post 5699 (Ocean Springs) and also held a lifetime membership with the American Legion Post 160 (Pascagoula).
Mr. Cottrell is preceded in death by his parents, Joel and Agnes Cottrell; his brother, Gordon Cottrell; his sisters, Agnes Shepard, Gladys Buchanan and Gloria Beauchesne and his great grand-child, Montgomery Wallis.
Mr. Cottrell is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Lou Cottrell of Ocean Springs; his son, Robert (Bobby) Cottrell of Vancleave; his daughter, Sharon Cottrell Wallis of Ocean Springs; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Thursday, June 2, 2011, from 6 pm until 8 pm at the Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford O'Keefe. On Friday, June 3, 2011, there will be an 11:30 am chapel service. Burial will be in the Biloxi National Cemetery.
