John Margus Albert, age 76, of Gulfport died Sunday, August 30, 2015 in Gulfport. He was born and raised in Houma, LA. At the age of eighteen he joined the USAF and served twelve years, having served in Vietnam and transferred to Keesler AFB where he began his career as a firefighter. In March of 1965 he flew the Observation Helicopter during the Selma March. In 1969 he left the USAF and became the first Vietnam Veteran hired at the Seabee Base as a civilian firefighter and retired in 1989 as Captain. He then served in the US. Coast Guard and retired as Chief. He was Baptist. He loved to cook and eat and loved people. He was a member of Fellowship Lodge #630 F&AM Masonic Lodge in Biloxi.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Margus and Ada Albert.
He is survived by his wife, Terry Albert; a daughter, Gina Bloom of Palm Bay, FL; two sons, Kevin Dye of Covington, LA and Phillip Albert of Woolmarket; a brother, Gene (Carolyn) Albert of Metairie, LA; grandchildren, Megan Britt, Brittney McMillin, Jacob Dye, Natasha Bloom, Micala Bloom, Owen Albert; a great-grandchild, Blaine Dye; and his little four legged friend “Mickey”.
The funeral service is Thursday, September 3, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home, O’Neal Road, Gulfport where friends may visit beginning at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery with U.S. Coast Guard honors.
