John grew up in Long Beach, MS., lived in Biloxi until Hurricane Katrina and then moved to Gulfport. He was a graduate of Long Beach High School, an avid wind surfer and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in D'Iberville. He formerly worked with the Mississippi State Forestry Commission and as a young boy dreamed of being a forest ranger. He also had worked for Dairy Fresh for many years and most recently worked with Lank Patterson Plumbing.
John was preceded in death by his brother, Jack E. Hopkins, Jr. and his grandmother, Eloise Cook.
Survivors include his mother, Mary Polk of Gulfport, MS., father and stepmother, Jack Edward and Doraldina Hopkins, Sr. of Houston, TX., sister, Linda Mecomber and husband, Allen, of Gulfport, MS., two brothers, James C. Hopkins and wife, Bonnie, of Gulfport, MS., and Henry K. Polk and wife, Debra, of Winterville, N.C., the love of his life and best friend, Veda Powell of Biloxi, two aunts, Jean Joyner of Panama City, FL., and Faye Bowden of Perry, FL., many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and cousins.
Funeral service will be Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at 7pm at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home on O'Neal Road in Gulfport. The visitation will be 6-9pm on Tuesday.
