John “Baby Al” Alvin Groue, Sr. went to be with his savior on Sunday, December 20, 2015. Baby Al was born on July 2, 1939. For 76 years he was a resident of the St. Martin community. He was an avid fisherman, loved throwing his cast net and always had time for one more throw. He spent much time in the outdoors and loved hunting at the Lucky 13 Camp. He enjoyed spending time watching his kids and grandkids playing sports, always loved family gatherings, and always the life of the party. He graduated from St. Martin High School where he was an outstanding athlete. Baby Al spent eleven years in the Mississippi National Guard, and was employed for eleven years by Bordens Milk Company before moving on to Ferson’s Optical until retirement. He married the love of his life, Shirley Louise Richard, and remained married for 53 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Royal Henry Groue, Sr., and Fatima Beal; and his brother, Royal Henry Groue, Jr. His survivors include his wife, Shirley, and his children, Johnny Groue (Linda), Melanie Sonnier (Danny), Gerald Groue (Kemberly); eight grandchildren, John Groue, III, (Ashley), Sarah Kendrick, Corey Groue (Sarah), Chelsea Groue, Daniel Sonnier, Gerald Groue, Jr., Chance Groue and Dakoda Groue; four great grandchildren, Breanna, Gabriel, Noah and Paisley; one brother, Muriel Groue; one sister, Colleen Bosarge; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank all family and friends who gave him love and support.
Services will be held on Monday, December 28, 2015, at Northside Assembly of God Church (14901 Lemoyne Blvd.). Visitations for family will be from 5:00-5:30p.m. and all others from 5:30-8:00 p.m. The Howard Avenue chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
