John "Hurland" Kates

John “Hurland” Kates, 81, of Larue, MS passed away on Thursday, September 1, 2022 at his home.

Mr. Kates was born at his home in Larue, MS on January 26, 1941 to John and Leona Kates. He graduated from Vancleave High School. Mr. Kates was employed with the International Paper Company for 44 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and taking care of his livestock.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Fay Kates; and his parents.

Mr. Kates’ survivors include his children, Deborah (Lynn) Smith and Anthony (Kim) Kates; his grandchildren, Hannah (Jerrell) Lott and Heather (Wayne) White; his great-grandchildren, Trey, Drake, Brett and Jenna Lott and Avery White; and his brother, Melvin Kates.

The family wishes to express a special thanks to Hospice of Light in Ocean Springs, MS.

Funeral Services will be held at Little Creek Church in Perkinston, MS on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at 12:00 pm. Friends may visit from 10:00 am until service time. Interment will follow at Wilkerson Cemetery in Vancleave, MS.
