Architect John Peter Mykolyk, 90, died peacefully amidst family on Friday, August 7th at his home on the Wolf River in Pass Christian. Mr. Mykolyk was born to Ukrainian immigrants and raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in the central plains of Canada, where he overcame hardship together with his late brother Mike and late sister Vicki Cowell. Adventurous spirits and hockey enthusiasts both, they would later join the Royal Canadian Air Force, which John parlayed into entry to the University of Manitoba, where he discovered a love for architecture and met Ismay Mary Mykolyk (nee Haines), with whom he launched his career in Minnesota and soon relocated to New Orleans and had two daughters.
A member of The American Institute of Architects since 1978, he later relocated to Pass Christian, with the offices of John Mykolyk & Associates on Scenic Drive. He designed many building in Pass Christian including city hall, library, Mississippi Power building and many schools. He and his family members enjoyed the Pass Christian Mardi Gras parade from his office balcony. He was known as a keen and unflinching intellect, avid tennis player, swimmer, active Rotary club member, occasional contributor of political cartoons to the local newspaper, and lover of a good gin martini. He liked to quote one of his favorite authors, Charles Bukowski: "and he never hurt a soul."
John is survived by his wife Deborah Browning Mykolyk of 43 years, and daughters Louise Brown and Carol Riddick. He is also survived by his six loving grandchildren in Mississippi, Texas and New York.
The family will hold a memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Pass Christian Rotary Charity Trust Fund, P.O. Box 143, P.C., MS 39571.
