Mr. Joseph "Smokey Joe" Smolcich, 88, of Biloxi, MS, died Saturday, October 9, 2010, in Biloxi.
Mr. Smolcich was born in Biloxi and remained a lifelong resident. He was 10 years old when he started working at the family owned Biloxi Seafood Company and delivered seafood to North Mississippi during his early teen years. He operated the "Joan Fayard" shrimp boat for 32 years on Back Bay and was the runner up in the "Mr. Biloxi" Competition in 1940. He was of the Catholic faith.
Mr. Smolcich was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Anna Kopszywa Smolcich; his parents, Joseph, Sr. and Frances Smolcich; and three brothers, Vincent Smolcich, Sam Smolcich and Anthony Smolcich. He is survived by his son, Gregory (Debbie) Smolcich of Gautier; two sisters, Matilda Barry of Jackson, and Melrita (Marvin) Raesner of Lamarque, TX; one brother, Steve (Pat) Smolcich of Biloxi; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at St. Michaels Catholic Church where friends may visit one hour before service time. Interment will follow in Biloxi City Cemetery. Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, Howard Avenue, in Biloxi is in charge of arrangements.
