It is with deep sorrow and love that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Karen Lurentha Chavis, who left us on April 8, 2025, at the age of 70. She passed away peacefully in her home after a brief but courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by the warmth of her family and the comfort of her cherished memories.
Karen was a woman whose love and kindness knew no bounds. She brought light and joy into the lives of all who knew her. Her unwavering support, boundless generosity, and gentle spirit made her the heart and soul of our family. A true matriarch, her strength and grace were evident in every word she spoke and action she took.
Born in Memphis, TN on October 1, 1954, Karen lived a full life filled with love, laughter, and countless precious moments with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a listener and a source of comfort to all who sought her wisdom and affection. Her kitchen was a place of warmth, both in the food she lovingly prepared and the love she poured into every meal. Her hands held stories, her heart held us all, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
Karen was a self-taught guitarist, an accomplished artist whose main love was painting, and an avid gardener. Her creative spirit and passion for life were reflected in everything she did, whether it was through the melodies she played, the beautiful artwork she created, or the vibrant gardens she nurtured with her own hands.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George Washington and Cleo Chavis; her siblings, Robert Chavis and Lavonne Jones; and her cherished dog, C-Salt who brought her tremendous joy and companionship.
Though her time with us was cut short, the impact she made is immeasurable. Karen taught us the importance of family, the value of kindness, and the strength that comes from love. We find solace in knowing she is now at peace, reunited with loved ones who have gone before her.
She is survived by her children, Tony (Nancy) Miller and Michael (Lisa) Miller; grandchildren, Aria Miller, Amara Bounds, Ryan Miller, Kristen (DJ) Hatcher, Mikaela Miller, and Jonah Miller; and great-grandchildren, Rhett and James Hatcher; her brother, Wayne Chavis; sister, Joan (Alan) Santa Cruz; and countless other family members and friends who will forever hold her memory dear.
A special thank you to Arden Hospice for their compassionate care and to our Dixie Street "framily" for their unwavering support during this time.
We will carry you in our hearts forever, Granny. Your love will live on in us.
Serving as pallbearers will be Tony Miller, Ryan Miller, Michael Miller, Jonah Miller, Craig Duda, and Mike Messenger.
