Kenneth “Poppa” Leroy Girten, age 80, of Biloxi, MS passed away peacefully June 23,2023.
In 1961, Ken joined the United States Air Force and proudly served his country for the next 25 years. While stationed at Keesler Air Force base, he met the love of his life, Charlotte. He retired from the Air Force as Master Sergeant.
Following retirement from the Air Force, he worked for the United States Postal Service retiring from there after 15 years of service.
Ken was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to tell his stories to anyone who was willing to listen. To so many loved ones, he was referred to as, Poppa. Poppa stepped up and was a role model providing words of wisdom to so many. He was the epitome of southern gentleman charm. He was a longtime member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, serving with the Knights of Columbus for many years.
Ken and Charlotte celebrated 50 years of wedded bliss on April 28, 2023.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Mildred Girten; brother, Gerald Girten; and son, Lester Thompson III.
Ken is survived by his wife, Charlotte; sons, Mark (Susan), David (Carroll), Scott, Skip (Linda), and Gregory; and many loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, June 30, 2023 at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Biloxi. Friends may visit from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. A graveside service will follow at 12:30 pm at Biloxi National Cemetery.
