Kenneth Raymond Hughes, Sr.

d. October 27, 2024

Biloxi

Kenneth Raymond “Kenny” Hughes, Sr., age 89, of Biloxi, passed away Sunday, October 27, 2024. He was born to Margaret Corca and Ray Edgar Hughes in Port Bolivar, Texas, on October 24, 1935. Kenny came to Biloxi when he was two years old with his mom and his brother Edval. He and Edval went back to Texas every summer to be with their dad and loved visiting with his many cousins whom he loved very much.

Kenny graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1953, and in 1956 he joined the US Army and spent the bulk of his service in Germany. When he returned, he went to USM, graduating in 1962. After pursuing different fields, he finally began working at Ingalls’ Shipbuilding and retired from there in 1997.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and his brother; Edval and Edval’s wife, Jane. Kenny is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Betty Jean Covich Hughes; his 3 sons, Kenny, Jr. (Sheri), Dow and Damian (Amber); his granddaughter, Raven Jolie Hughes; his sisters, Margaret (Tootsie) Martino, Brenda Viator and Beverly Hough; and many much-loved nieces, nephews, and friends.

Kenny loved the Notre Dame Irish and that is obvious with all of the Irish memorabilia that is in the home. He did get the opportunity a couple times to travel to see them in action. He loved hunting and fishing and spending time with the “Lunch Bunch,” his friends from the Slavonian Lodge of which he was made an Honorary Member many years ago when he was very involved with the Slavic Golf Tournament. Those same Lunch friends honored and surprised Kenny by naming a Biloxi street “Kenny Ln” in his name, which meant so much to him and to his family.

Kenny was always generous with his time and money. He sat everyday with his brother when he was seriously ill, and he would pick up his older friends who were no longer able to drive and take them out for breakfast or lunch. Whether eating at a restaurant and giving big tips or generously slipping money to his nephews, nieces, or acquaintances, Kenny loved helping people. In addition, he had a wonderful sense of humor and was always smiling!

He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved him!

The family wishes to express sincere thanks to the staff of Home Instead for their help over the past two years. In addition, the support they received from St. Joseph’s Hospice has been invaluable.
