Lanny Drue Ferguson, Sr., age 80, of Latimer, MS passed away on October 5, 2024 into the arms of his Lord and Savior.

He was a lifelong resident of the St. Martin and Latimer communities and was a graduate of St. Martin High School in 1963. While in high school, he worked at St. Martin Grocery. After graduation, he worked for Gulf Hills Dude Ranch in Ocean Springs as a Wrangler, leading trail rides and taking guests on hayrides. In 1962, he joined the Army National Guard, where he served for seven years. Although, he was diagnosed with Hereditary Ataxia at age 30, Lanny continued working with horses at Gulf Hills until the dude ranch and western recreation closed in 1978. He then drove a truck for Mavar Seafood until 1983 when his illness forced him to retire.

In January 1969, he met his soon-to-be wife, Nita Thompson, on a trail ride and they were engaged in February. Lanny and Nita married in March of 1969.

Lanny accepted Christ as his Savior in 1982 and was ordained as a Deacon at McClellan Road Baptist Church in 1985. He enjoyed serving the Lord in many ways such as, Assistant Sunday School Director, Assistant Discipleship Director, and yard maintenance.

Lanny loved to go to horse sales and horse shows where he watched family members compete. He served as president of the Woolmarket Riding Club and was later active in Lazy B. Riding Club. He loved his Australian shepherds, Cotton and Cody, and enjoyed helping Lanny Jr with his tack business.

Lanny is preceded in death by his parents, Conard and Willmetti Ferguson; and three brothers, Rodney (Lois) Ferguson, Carl (Reba) Ferguson, and Conard Edward Ferguson.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Nita Ferguson; son, Lanny Ferguson, Jr.; sister, Elzie Mae Davis; sister-in-law, Barbara Ferguson; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, October 10, 2024 at McClellan Road Baptist Church. Friends are invited to visit from 9:30 am – 11 am. Interment will follow at Bosarge Cemetery.
