Lena Naomi Fuller passed away in Conroe, Texas on April 15, 2005, after a lengthy illness. At her passing, Lena was surrounded by her loving family and passed in comfort, peace and dignity. She was 88 years old. Lena was born August 17, 1916 in Atlanta, Georgia. She continued to live in Atlanta until 1942 when her patriotism and love of country called her to enlist in the U. S. Women's Army. Lena attained the rank of Master Sergeant and received numerous decorations and citations, including Women's Army Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, a Philippines Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars and an Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with three Bronze Service Stars. During WW II Lena served in battle campaigns in New Guinea, Southern Philippines and Luzon. Lena completed her impressive military career by receiving an receiving an Honorable Discharge from the Women's Army. In recent years Lena has maintained her allegiance to the military as evidenced by her becoming a Charter Member of the U. S. Women's Memorial and a member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars. Up until her passing, Lena always wore a U. S. flag pin on her clothing. In 1947, Lena married another Master Sergeant from the U. S. Military, Richard A. Fuller. In 1948, their only child, Richard A. Fuller, IIs born and the family continued its military adventures, living on eight different U. S. Air Force Bases. The last move was to Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, MS in 1958. Lena and her family made Biloxi their home.. She remained in Biloxi until 2002, when her health declined and she needed to be closer to her son and his family. Lena resided at Edenbrook Senior Living Community in The Woodlands, Texas until her passing. Lena's favorite hobbies were reading and music, along with keeping up with the love of her life, her only grandchild, Trey Fuller. She was also a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Biloxi. While living at Edenbrook of The Woodlands she was named VIP of the month and received a Senior Gold Medal in golf. Any one who knew Lena was impressed by her friendliness, dry humor and wanting to do the right thing. Lena is survived by her son, Richard A. Fuller, II, and his wife, Pamela Fuller (and her family); a grandson, Richard A. "Trey" Fuller, III; nieces, Jackie Mears-Mathieu, Judy Larson and Janice Mears; nephews, Thomas Carter, William Carter and Bruce Carter; very special longtime friends, Jack and Wynn Cobb, Cathy Coffman, Della and Finley McCaughn, Ann Shields and her family and Ken Grace who provided much needed personal care during her husband's, Richard A. Fuller, last days. Lena is preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard A. Fuller; parents, Thomas and Lottie Carter; brothers, Roy and John Carter and sisters, Grace Mears and Elliott Newberry Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 18, 2005, at the Pass Road Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Homes in Biloxi where friends may visit from 9:30 a.m. till service time. Interment will follow in Southern Memorial Park
