Lt. Col. (USAF, Ret.) Lloyd "Blue" Caillavet, 93, died February 8, 2005 in Biloxi, MS.
Blue was born in Biloxi on December 23, 1911. He graduated from Biloxi High in 1931 and attended Millsaps College, Jackson, Southeastern University, Washington, D.C., University of Maryland and Florida State University.
Commissioned 2nd Lt., Corps of Engineers, U.S.A. on May 25, 1942. He then went overseas on August 6, 1942. Blue joined Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force in October of 1942 and served in England, North Africa, France, Luxembourg and Germany through March 10, 1946 when discharged.
Recalled to active duty on January 1949 and assigned to 3380 M&S Group, Keesler Air Force Base. In January of 1951 he was assigned to Headquarters USAFE with duty at Wiesbaden, Germany. He transferred to SHAPE, Fontainebleau, France in April of 1951 and served as Logistic Officer until December of 1953.
Blue attended Command and Staff School, in January - July 1954 then assigned to AACS, Andrews Air Force Base as Chief of Supply. In January of 1957 he transferred to Moron, AFB, Spain with duty as Director of Material. Reassigned as Director of Material to Tuslog, Det. 95, Karamursel, Turkey in August of 1962 to 1964. His last active duty assignment was Special Assistant to Base Commander at March AFB, California. He then retired on May 18, 1965.
After his retirement he returned home to Biloxi. He served as Disaster Chairman for the Biloxi Red Cross, and later on the Board of Directors, for Biloxi-Gulfport Red Cross.
In 1968 Blue was the first employee of the Urban Renewal and served with the agency until December 31, 1972.
His military decorations include the Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters; WWII Victory Medal; European African Middle Eastern Service Medal; American Service Medal; and the Air Force Commendation.
Blue was a member of Knights of Columbus, VFW, American Legion, Elks Loge #606, Biloxi Business Men's Club, charter member of Jr. Chamber of Commerce and first President, Charter member of Les Pierrots and also named organization, member of City Government Study Committee, Vice President and Director of Retired Officers Association and was a Charter member of the Gulf Islands National Seashore Advisory Board.
Blue is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth, sister-in-law, Melba Caillavet of Biloxi, two nieces, Shirley, husband Walter Dye, of Ocean Springs, and Patrice Briggs of Roebuck, South Carolina, his five nephews, Arthur Caillavet of Biloxi, Donald Caillavet, wife Betry, of Ocean Springs, Nickey Caillavet, wife Mildred, of Ocean Springs, Dewitt, wife Alexa Caillavet of Hernandon, MS, and Bayne Caillavet, wife Esther, of Anthony, Fl.
Services will be held graveside at Biloxi National Cemetery on Monday, February 14, 2005 at 11 am.
