Lt. Col. Robert C. Buchanan, U.S. Army, Retired, 95, from Biloxi, MS passed away peacefully at home on Friday, January 6, 2017 surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife, Estuko (Esta) of Biloxi. He was born on April 5, 1921 in Roselle Park, NJ to Bertha Marie (Majestat) and Wilbur T. Buchanan. Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII, and then attended Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY, and graduated with a Degree in Engineering. Upon graduation in 1949, Bob was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. and served with the Army Corps of Engineers. His unit was one of the first to deploy to Korea in 1950. Bob and family were stationed all over the world, including Ft. Belvoir, VA; Ft. Meade, MD; twice stationed in Germany, The Presidio in California, and he taught at the University of Rhode Island, before retiring from active duty. He continued his career as a civil servant at the Quonset Naval Air Station in North Kingstown, RI, and Fort Buckner in Okinawa, Japan. Bob moved to Melbourne, FL in 1984, and Biloxi, MS in 2004. No matter where he called home, he enjoyed gardening, playing cards, bowling, golf, and was a sports enthusiast, encouraging all his children to be active. He often reminisced about his short-lived baseball career, and had a love/hate relationship with the Boston Red Sox, whom he often referred to as the Red Flops. He also enjoyed playing golf with some of the "greats," including Orville Moody, who won the U.S. Open in 1969. Bob will be remembered as loving all sorts of puzzles; he was an avid crossword and Sudoku solver. He is survived by his children; Paul, Nancy, Elaine (Robert Horne), Charles, James (Anne), Robert Jr. (Patti), Kerry (Joe Caparco) and their mother, Mary C. Buchanan of Narragansett, RI. He is predeceased by his daughter, Judy. He is survived by 15 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. The Pass Road Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home in Biloxi, MS is in charge of the arrangements. Burial will be private, and final remains will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
